Bafana’s Nations Cup preparations going well - Tau

Percy Tau says the South African players can’t wait to get to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as they prepare for what many of them will be the biggest tournament of their careers.

Tau is coming off an excellent campaign in the Belgian second tier, where he was on loan at Royale Union St Gilloise from English Premiership side Brighton and Hove Albion and won the Player of the Season in that division.

But he can grow his reputation further with a good showing at the Nations Cup, where South Africa have been pooled with Ivory Coast, Morocco and Namibia.

“So far so good, the guys are looking forward to the tournament. We just want to get ready for it,” Tau said. "The boys are excited and we just want to make the nation proud, we are still trying to prepare but I believe things will come right.

"I feel fresh, I just cannot way to play for Bafana. I had three weeks off. It is not bad compared to some of the other guys.

"If you look after yourself it becomes easier. I got to prepare at Sundowns for rush games and tough scheduled. It is easier now when I face such demands.”

Tau faces an uncertain club future as he battles for the paperwork that would allow him to play in England, but says he is not concerned about that now.

"I am just trying to take everything as it comes and focus on my journey. I am just focussing on Bafana, I don't want to get my mind into it.

"Football is football, if you focus on the football then everything becomes easier. To prepare me for what is coming, different leagues and coaching.

"The brand will always be important than any sportsmen. I am no different, there is so much to achieve and to get out of football and life. I am still on the right path."

Bafana Bafana open their Nations Cup campaign against Ivory Coast on June 24.
