Malesela confident success in Nedbank Cup final

TS Galaxy coach Dan Malesela says he is thinking about nothing other than victory in Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final against Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Malesela, who lifted South Africa’s FA Cup as a player with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, says his National First Division side have nothing to fear ahead of the decider at a sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

“I don’t want to go to a final of the Nedbank Cup and say, ‘OK, fine, we got a silver medal – no, man! We need bigger things,” Malesela told reporters.

“You need to make history, you need to break records, because records are there to be broken and history is there to be made.

“So, if we don’t make history, who will remember us? Because, we go there – ‘Oh, they reached the final …’ I actually forgot which team has reached the final from the NFD.

“Nobody speaks about that, but if we go and win, people will remember us forever. People still talk to me about the Bobsave [in 1988], just because we [Pirates] won it.”

Malesela adds that his side has no problem with their underdog status, which they held in the semi-finals against top-flight Lamontville Golden Arrows and came away 3-1 winners.

“If we can take on Arrows then surely we can take on Chiefs. They are in the same league as Arrows‚ so why not? I think we can.”

The coach says that he will have the team properly prepared for the game, and then it comes down to how the players execute on the pitch.

“We need to prepare this team properly‚ very‚ very well,” he said.  “It depends on us as well‚ primarily us to say how do we handle them and how they handle us. Where we are weak we’ll try and fix at half-time and where we are strong we add."
