Teko Modise announces retirement from football

One of South Africa’s most accomplished players from recent times, Teko Modise, has announced his retirement from football after a 13-year top-flight career.

He will be remembered as a skillful artist on the pitch, who combined amazing talent with a keen football brain, but will not be lost to the game.

Current side Cape Town City have said he will stay on with them in a new, unspecified role.

“I have always wanted to be a professional footballer, it’s the only place I could be happy. When I started growing up and getting recognized, I wanted to be the Doctor Khumalo of this era,” Modise said in a video released by the club.

“I knew this day would come, I can proudly say I have achieved everything I wanted to as a footballer. I just hope in a couple of years from now, somebody will be sitting here and saying they got inspired by my career path.”

Modise made 303 starts for top-flight teams and could end his career with one more when City travel to Black Leopards on Saturday for their final game of the campaign.

He started his career with City Pillars in the National First Division, before later playing for SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and City.
