Duo win NFD promotion at ABC Motsepe League play-offs

JDR Stars and Steenberg United will play in the National First Division next season after both won through to the ABC Motsepe League Play-Off final in Cape Town on Friday.

The pair have sealed their promotion and will replace Witbank Spurs and Ubuntu Cape Town in next season’s second-tier.

Cape Town-based Steenberg scored a last-minute winner against North West side Casric FC via Athini Jodwana in a 1-0 success and take their place in the NFD after a number of years of near misses.

The side has a number of players with past PSL or NFD experience, including Abduraghmaan White, Craig Joemath, Lyle Peters, Buyani Sali and Welcome Qalanto.

Pretoria-based JDR Stars had a much easier time of it as they dispatched Hungry Lions from the Northern Cape 3-0. Sello Letooane and Nkosana More found the back of the net after an unfortunate down goal had put Lions on the back foot.

Stars and United will now fight for the ABC Motsepe League trophy, which comes with a winners’ cheque of R1-million, providing them with plenty to play for even if their primary goals have been achieved.
