Sredojevic still optimistic over league chances

Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic says his players will go for broke on the final day of the Absa Premiership season, when they will likely need a victory over Polokwane City in order to stand a chance of claiming the league title.

Pirates currently lead second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns by a single point, but have played a game more and could find themselves trailing by two points going into Saturday’s home clash with Polokwane.

That is if Sundowns can claim a win at home to Lamontville Golden Arrows on Tuesday, while a draw would leave them level with The Buccaneers, but trailing on goal-difference.

Pirates were held to a 2-2 draw by Cape Town City on Saturday after letting a late lead slip.

“We really wanted it [the win] for the bench, the jersey and the supporters, but it was not meant to be,” Sredojevic said. |Now our focus is on the game against Polokwane, we shall continue where we stopped in this match, all out in attack.”

The Serbian coach admitted his side sat back too much after taking the lead against City in an electric atmosphere at the Athlone Stadium. They were punished after allowing a cross to be headed home by Craig Martin.

“Subconsciously, players were withdrawing back, we respected all the balls except that one. We took some risks after that because we wanted to win, but unfortunately we did not get what we wanted.

“I need to give credit to the players, they gave everything they could. We played against a very good team, a well-coached team that had no pressure but had intention to get a result at home.”

BidVest Wits are also still in contention for the league title but would need Pirates to lose to Polokwane, and Sundowns to get no more than a point from their final two games.

After that Wits would also need to ensure they got a victory away at Golden Arrows on the final day of the campaign.
